A commitment to sustainability underpins

everything we do

As a pioneer in the solar power industry, we are committed to operating with transparency and integrity. Here, we outline some of the areas that make up our sustainability approach. They include our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

Sustainable Development Goals

Our sustainability ambitions align with the United Nations’ 17  Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We have identified three goals where our work will have the most impact:

7

Affordable and
clean energy

Affordable and clean energy

Africa has a power deficit, and an estimated 600 million people still live without a clean and reliable source of electricity. Our solutions, especially our merchant plants where we trade power onto the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) can help to improve this power deficit by providing more generation onto the regional grid networks.

Decent work and
economic growth

Reliable electricity is essential for development. Our solar projects help reduce load shedding and power interruptions, supporting stable energy supply and enabling sustainable growth. By transitioning to clean energy, we’re empowering communities and driving economic progress.

Solarcentury Africa’s projects are renewable based and are able to offset carbon emissions from thermal plants and fossil fuel consumption.

Initiatives

All our projects have a CSR programme, which is a non-profit objective  aimed at improving the livelihood of the communities in which they  operate.

Balama Schools

Balama Schools

As part of their commitment to giving back to the community, Solarcentury Africa (SCA) and Twigg decided to help local primary schools by providing them with access to electricity. Together, they identified which schools to support, funded the project, and signed a construction agreement to make it all happen. Their goal was to bring clean, renewable energy to three primary schools—Muapé, Pirira, and Chipembe—all located in the Balama District.

These schools, previously without electricity, now benefit from solar systems (2.4 kW PV + 9.6 kWh storage each) that provide eight hours of power daily. This project, supporting nearly 1,400 students, is helping to transform the learning environment and promote sustainable development in the local communities.

Chimuara Seeds & Bicycles

Chimuara Seeds & Bicycles

The seed distribution initiative was introduced to help project-affected people (PAPs) continue their farming activities after losing access to their original land due to the project. With their ability to sustain themselves impacted, the project made a commitment to provide seeds and ongoing agricultural support to help them rebuild their livelihoods.

In addition, a bicycle distribution program was launched to address the challenge of distance. Many PAPs were relocated to new farmland located at least 12 kilometers away from their homes. This created daily mobility issues, making it hard for them to reach their fields. The bicycles were provided to ease this burden and support the community’s ability to maintain their agricultural routines.

Governance

Our commitment to ESG principles is embedded in our leadership structure. The Executive Committee (ExCo), comprising our CEO and key department heads, endeavours to ensure integration of ESG considerations into our corporate strategy.

The ExCo convenes regularly to deliberate on vital strategic decisions that shape the trajectory of Solarcentury Africa. This dynamic forum ensures that our growth targets are not only met but exceeded, reflecting our dedication to sustainable business practices.

The committee features representation from each department, thus guaranteeing a comprehensive array of viewpoints and perspectives in our decision-making processes. By fostering a collaborative leadership approach, we uphold the highest standards of governance and ethics.
