Solarcentury Africa has been granted full, unconditional membership as a Market Participant in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). This milestone allows us to sell electricity from our merchant plants currently under development within the SAPP interconnected power system. It also enables us to leverage our strong balance sheet to sell power on behalf of other Independent Power Producers (IPPs) seeking access to SAPP markets.

Our goal is to develop a 500MW renewable energy merchant fleet by 2030—a major step toward helping reduce the region’s power deficit and advancing energy security across Southern Africa.

Power Selling Options

We are licenced to sell power across the SAPP interconnected system through our SAPP membership. 
In addition, we are licenced to sell power in:

  • Namibia - licenced under the MSB Market to sell to customers within Namibia, to export power and to sell power from or on behalf of other IPPs
  • Zambia – licenced under the Open Access Framework to sell to customers within Zambia, to export power and to sell power on behalf of other IPPs
  • Botswana – licenced to export power, and ready to sell to customers

The Context

  • Power project development has always relied upon a dedicated off-taker committing to purchasing all the power produced for a long term (15 years+).This is expensive and very time consuming for the off-taker as well as for the development company
  • Developers often tender low to win the contract, but then fail to reach financial close as tariffs offered are unbankable. This results in projects being cancelled and years wasted before the process is repeated
  • Many utilities are not considered bankable and if funding can be made available it is expensive

The Solution

  • A new approach is needed which is the Merchant approach
  • Solarcentury Africa is developing a number of solar PV projects across the SADC region. The first 25 MW project in Zambia has reached financial close and has been selling since the 1st of July 2025
  • Solarcentury Africa will develop, fund, own and operate the plants
  • Solarcentury Africa will sell the power produced from these plants through its selling company directly to utilities and end customers via bilateral agreements or on the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) spot markets
