Lead Project Manager
GIBRALTAR
FULL-TIME ON-SITE

Main Purpose

As Lead Project Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the successful delivery of a 14MW/MWh BESS project in Gibraltar. In order to qualify for this position a proven track record of delivering large-scale BESS projects is essential.

As Solarcentury Africa’s on-site representative, you will support the Local EPC contractor and act as the primary interface with the client to ensure the successful completion of all outstanding works following Commercial Operation Date (COD) achieved in April 2026.

This role is focused on project close-out, remediation, and optimization activities, ensuring all remaining technical, construction, and systems-related items are completed to the required standards.

You will also lead operational validation and performance improvement initiatives, ensuring the BESS plant performs reliably and that all required technical enhancements are implemented.

Key activities and responsibilities

Work in conjunction with Head of Operations, Head of Contracts and Logistics and Engineering Manager/external Engineering to perform the following main activities.

  • Lead closure of all punch list, defects, and outstanding works.
  • Validate plant performance including BESS, EMS, PPC, and SCADA systems in coordination with the Asset Management representative
  • Identify underperformance and implement corrective and optimisation actions in coordination with the Asset Management representative
  • Supervise civil, electrical, auxiliary, and communication system completion
  • Coordinate procurement of outstanding materials and resolve supply issues.
  • Act as main interface between client, EPC, OEMs, and internal teams.
  • Lead reporting, meetings, and stakeholder coordination.
  • Ensure as-built documentation and project close-out deliverables are completed.
  • Preparation of internal and review of external pre-construction documentation and plans – and ensuring delivery of the project in strict adherence to these plans
  • Responsibility for internal and external reporting and meetings on project progress
  • Responsibility for regular site H&S and QA/QC audits, including ensuring issues found are addressed by the EPC in the appropriate time
  • Other responsibilities for project delivery including:
    • Project Schedule management
    • Management of Variation Orders (including evaluation, negotiation, and tracking of changes to scope, cost, and schedule)
    • Overseeing plant construction to ensure design, quality and health and safety, reporting and documentation standards are met including living near site for the majority of the construction period.
    • EPC payment milestone management
    • Weekly reporting to the Client on project progress
    • Assistance with preparation of Solarcentury Africa internal Project Management processes and policies.

Qualifications and experience

  • Minimum of 5 years proven experience in utility-scale BESS systems and project management with a strong operational background
  • Thorough experience and understanding of hybrid generation systems.
  • Strong project management and close-out expertise.
  • Experience managing EPC contractors in operational environments.
  • Technical knowledge of BESS systems (batteries, PCS, EMS, PPC, SCADA).
  • Understanding of electrical (MV/LV) and civil infrastructure.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management.
  • Strong electrical knowledge and ability to read/understand technical drawings.
  • Thorough understanding of British and International H&S standards, including suitable site H&S qualifications, .e.g., IOSHH or comparable local certification
  • Bachelor’s degree OR equivalent combination of education and years of related experience
  • Significant experience managing vendor and client payment terms to achieve positive cash flow
  • Strong understanding of financial models and management of budgeting cash flow
  • The ability to create and manage a schedule and budget to required margins
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written
  • Ability to work in Gibraltar.
  • Languages: Fluent in English (spoken and written)

Desirable skills/experience

  • Languages: Fluent in Spanish (spoken and written)
  • Extensive experience making day to day decisions at construction site.
  • Understanding of subcontractor hiring process with the ability to manage company protocols and ensure the only the best and most ethical subcontractors are used at all times.
  • Awareness of renewable energy sector, especially solar PV, and related policies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; team player attitude.
  • Ability to help build and strengthen an organisation, building structure over time.
  • Strong computer skills, including strength in MS Project, MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Valid Driver’s Licence.
