Solarcentury wins auction to supply Mayor of London’s solar group purchase scheme

Solarcentury is selected as the official solar provider of group purchase scheme by iChoosr.

Solarcentury has been selected as the sole winning supplier for a solar group purchase scheme on behalf of the Mayor of London.

The Solar Together London initiative, run by iChoosr, makes solar panels more affordable for customers by offering the opportunity to buy as part of a group. The offer is the first of its kind in London and is available initially for residents of the boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Sutton, Kingston and Merton.

The highly sought-after contract was won by Solarcentury following a reverse auction last month. Some 3,400 customers applied to take part in the group purchase scheme prior to the auction and applications have now been reopened until 14th June.

The contract will be delivered in partnership with Ikea, with customers benefiting from up to 41 per cent off market prices. An average purchase of 10 solar panels is expected to achieve a saving of more than £1,400 through the group purchase scheme – from approximately £4,620 down to £3,210.

‘Keen to cut energy bills’

The scheme is part of Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s Energy for London programme which aims to cut energy bills for Londoners and supply homes and workplaces with clean energy as part of a wider plan to make London a zero-carbon city by 2050.

Following Solarcentury’s win, Shirley Rodrigues, Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy, said she was “delighted to see thousands of people register” for the Solar Together scheme.

“Londoners are clearly keen to cut their energy bills and generate more clean, local energy,” she said. “The capital has a wealth of buildings that can harness solar energy, but we’re simply not making enough of them. The Mayor’s ambition is for London to generate ten times as much solar energy by 2030.”
